Gaining valuable feedback for Belfast’s Department for Infrastructure’s transport planning

Radical changes in transport planning

Belfast’s Department for Infrastructure (DfI) were looking for citizen feedback on their new transport plan. The crucial Eastern Transport Plan (ETP) would address transport-decision making up to 2035.

The ETP 2035 needed to ensure it received a range of respondents from all 5 councils it would affect.

Belfast’s DfI also recognised the need to adjust council’s approach with radical change that proactively addressed society’s over reliance on private vehicles.

Driving responses with Citizen Space

It was important that the public consultation process was inclusive of urban and rural areas and had a demographic spread across different communities, genders and abilities.

Citizen Space’s diverse range of survey question tools mean they could pose different challenges and concerns in fresh ways to establish a hierarchy of the public wants and needs around transport planning.

A shorter walk to better transport

The consultation received an overwhelmingly positive reaction with 501 responses on Citizen Space, 29.5 times higher than that on email.

Belfast’s DfI’s plan showed close alignment with public feedback, showcasing the value of citizen engagement in crafting transport plans. Following the consultation, they made minor changes based on public response.

“Reinforced by the majority positive feedback received against each proposal, these objectives present a good foundation upon which the Plan can be built.”
