Undertaking a Health and Disability System Review with Citizen Space

Making healthcare accessible for all

In 2018 New Zealand’s health minister announced a review of the Health and Disability System across the country to future-proof processes and meet citizens' needs.

New Zealand recognised that, while people were living longer and healthier lives, the health system was not serving everyone equally. Low-income populations often delayed seeking care, and persistent disparities in outcomes remained for Māori and Pacific peoples.

They needed an accessible and inclusive way to hear from all populations on how to reduce health inequity across the country.

Choosing a digital platform for the healthcare review

Using Citizen Space they were able to gather both citizen views and evidence on current issues and opportunities to improve their services.

Utilising the open-ended survey design and evidence collation capabilities, they were able to analyse all responses on the govtech platform, grouping responses by type.

Citizen Space’s impact on the Health and Disability System Review

Overall, they received 646 submissions from key stakeholders, organisations and the public, which were easily coded into types, demographics and other analysis groups using Citizen Space’s capabilities.

This made it easy to spot common themes, and feedback to the public on how their submissions impacted the overall review process, helping to identify new healthcare barriers and opportunities for future improvement.
