Achieving A Smoke Free Future For New Zealand

Smoking out New Zealand’s tobacco users

Smoking is on the decline worldwide, but there are still steps the government needs to take to facilitate this and control the tobacco industry.

The Ministry of Health New Zealand, or Aotearoa as it’s known in Māori, needed to consult on their Action Plan to make the country smokefree by 2025.

Smoking rates are still higher than the national average among certain demographics including Māoris, Pacific peoples and those living in New Zealand’s most disadvantaged communities.

As well as engaging with key stakeholders via workshops and Pacific-focussed community meetings, New Zealand needed an online component to engage with whānau Māor - generational family groups and those in remote locations.

Clearing the air with Citizen Space

It was essential any consultation on New Zealand’s Smokefree Action Plan 2025 provided the option for free-text answers and detailed submissions.

Using Citizen Space for its online component and additional survey tools, they were able to receive detailed insights.

Citizen Space provided actionable responses

2,254 citizens responded to the consultation via Citizen Space, just under half of all recorded responses, and more than double that of any other sole activity.  The  feedback was extremely valuable in informing and contributing to the development of the final Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 Action Plan.

Thanks to Citizen Space’s response tools, they were able to analyse qualitative data quickly and easily as it grouped submission responses into themes. This provided a clear set of priority categories among responders, further shaping the Smokefree Action Plan 2025.

“In analysing submissions, we collated data in the free-text sections using tools in the Citizen Space application, and organised and analysed the yes or no answers. Multiple themes could be extracted from each response.”
