A Call for Evidence on the National Plan for Music Education

Finding a better sound
Since the National Plan for Music Education (NPME) in 2011, the UK government has made huge strides and investments in improving equal access to music education for all children, regardless of race, gender, location or financial situation.
Over the years since the original NPME education and technology have both dramatically evolved, leaving the plan outdated and in need of a refresh. To find out how effective the original plan was, and what needs changing moving forward, they launched a nationwide Call for Evidence to assess the current framework.
To achieve this, the Department for Education needed input from key stakeholders involved in music education - teachers, parents, music services, schools, children themselves etc.
Conducting the National Call for Evidence
A Call for Evidence was the best way to get detailed insights from stakeholders on the success of the NPME.
They needed a platform that could run large-scale engagement processes and provide ways to receive qualitative and quantitative feedback
Citizen Space is designed for Calls for Evidence, offering detailed survey design options with open and closed questions.

Music to our ears
In total, the Call for Evidence received over 5,000 responses, including 275 from young people.
Citizen Space’s flexibility provided meaningful insights into the divided responses and varying degrees of success of the NPME. This allowed for the 2020 National Plan for Music Education to be responsive and address key issues that had been highlighted.
“Valuable insights have been gathered through the responses that were received to the call for evidence…These insights will be used to inform the planned refresh of the National Plan for Music Education”
