Major public consultations

Draft Charter of Aged Care Rights: hearing from multiple stakeholders

When the Australian Government Department of Health drafted a charter outlining the rights of aged care consumers, they wanted to make sure all parties affected had opportunity to give input. They were keen to hear from care recipients, families and carers and from service providers, consumer organisations and advocacy groups. So they opened up a wide-reaching consultation, using Citizen Space to let people respond online.

"Having a shared understanding between people receiving care and aged care providers helps everyone to work together to achieve safe, high-quality aged care…It is vital aged care consumers have an opportunity to provide input."

Internal/staff engagement

Australian Federal Department of Industry, Innovation and Science: ways of working

The Australian Federal Department of Industry, Innovation and Science used Citizen Space to run a series of internal ‘ways of working’ surveys. As part of a major office refit, the consultation helped to identify how different individuals liked to work across different divisions in the organisation. Using Citizen Space’s survey cloning feature, the department was able to create the survey and clone it for each additional division.

The consultation results shaped the way the offices were ultimately fitted out. The team responsible for the renovation was able to move a whole floor or division out, consult, see people's preferences before taking that feedback into account and moving everyone back in. Depending on the staff preferences identified through the survey, each office was fitted with different desks and layout.

"Getting the Citizen Space consultation hub up and running and educating people in a more online space has been the best project I've worked on at the department. Showing them the benefits of consulting digitally and educating our staff on the benefits of a digital-first focus has been exciting."

Technical/regulatory review

Civil Aviation Safety Authority: fatigue review

The Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) asked the aviation community to comment on recommendations made by a team of leading international specialists after they conducted an independent review of fatigue rules for operators and pilots. The consultation asked respondents to raise any implementation issues and provide feedback on the highest priorities for action to help CASA develop their response to the review.

A wide range of stakeholders took part, including unions and industry representative organisations, air operators and a number of individuals. Feedback was generally supportive of the review recommendations including the need to modernise Australia’s fatigue rules and CASA ultimately decided to adopt 21 of the 24 review recommendations.

"Both the expert review of the new fatigue rules and industry consultation has supported the need to modernise Australia’s fatigue requirements. The review and consultation identified areas where improvements could be made to both the fatigue requirements and their introduction. CASA is taking more than 50 actions to address key issues."
