Genuine Party Political Participative Democracy In Bristol

This is an interesting story. Mark Thomas has put together a project where anyone can turn up to one of his shows and suggest and vote for policies for a new political party, with the winning policies becoming official party policy.

Going under the moniker of ‘The People’s Manifesto‘, there’s some serious stuff coming out of it, but some comedy policy elements as well, and the party is officially standing a general election candidate right where we are here in Bristol West. The candidate’s Danny Kushlick who runs the Transform Drug Policy Foundation, and to declare an interest, one of my first jobs after my masters was working for Danny at Transform as a volunteer for a short while. He’s a lovely and straight up bloke, so he should go down well on the doorstep if he decides to get out there.

So it’s semi serious, semi joking, but doesn’t all politics come across like that at time? This looks like a really interesting exercise in handing Politics with a ‘big P’ over to anyone who wants to get involved, it will be interesting to see what the good people of Bristol West make of it.
