Bebo On The Way Out?

As more and more people are looking to use ‘social media’ as part of their engagement and consultation activities, it’s worth keeping an eye on what’s going on in the different platforms. Facebook’s still doing fine, though it’s an easy one to get wrong engagement wise. Myspace is still doing its thing, like Geocities never happened. But Bebo, the social network generally for the much young teenage demographic seems to be running into a bit of trouble at the moment.

As this BBC article says,

Bebo, unfortunately, is a business that has been declining and, as a result, would require significant investment in order to compete in the competitive social networking space

Odd one. We’ve tried using Bebo for projects before, and found it the most difficult to get going with and get results from out of the range of options available. The language users use is pretty incomprehensible too, so it’s a very easy one to come across as inauthentic with for sure.

Worth keeping an eye on, especially as no-one really knows what happens online if a popular social network (and over 5 million users isn’t too shabby) closes. Will the barricades be manned, or will people not really care?
